It’s widely know that Glasgow is the best city in the UK but when the sun is out on a Good Friday and the long weekend begins it might as well take on Berlin and New York City (hey, we’re feeling good down on the ranch today, tick with us!). Long days fade into the hazy nights and you start to feel you’re getting your monies worth out of livin’.

We’re generally spoiled for choice for culture and entertainment nowadays with plenty to do and see seven days a week but when it comes to the weekend Glasgow is becoming increasingly tough to do or see everything you’d like. Tonight El Rancho will pick two events for you, before and after (not ‘efters’ though, that’s your call).

First up at Nice n Sleazys it’s Freakender with Hoveriii from L.A. on Permanent Records playing trippy, garage rock n roll with support from the mighty Shredd and newcomers Pot Nudos. Doors from 8pm. See the event below and remember Freakender are hosting the after party in the bar upstairs till 3am!

Onto the clurb now and for something a little different. 52 Girls the London/Glasgow based night/club/party is for everyone but who aim to bring together a space for women, femmes, non-binary people and allies to bring empowerment to the foreground. The event aims to celebrate women’s exploration of music and women in music.

In it’s 8th edition now and their 3rd in Glasgow tonight’s crew consists of guest Djs and Artists including BRB, KATIE SHAMBLES, PITY PARTY FILM CLUB, PUKE, RAISSA, SHREK666 and SUZY (FREE LOVE). It’s a proper post-punk, devils disco affair so dress to impress and keep the dance floor alive!

Entry by donation to the wonderful Project Ability. See the event page below for more info…

Celebrating one year of late night club leaning parties next Friday 12th April is A Cut Above. Over the past year the night has seen electronic based DJ’s and live acts come together with a live visual element to shake up the dance floor norm. The birthday bash takes place at The Flying Duck and features LYLO alongside WomenSaid and DJs Sofay, Umrkachumer with live visuals from HIVS**. It’s a late one for gig goers but that’s the point! Doors are at 11pm-3am and door tax is £5/6.

Formed in South Auckland New Zealand in 1997, Coolies have changed line ups a few times but remained a trio of avant-garage, noise-pop, guitar experimentationalists! The Coolies first got together in high school with a common love for the likes of Patti Smith, Bikini Kill and X-Ray Spex. Before finishing High School they had already supported Beastie Boys, Cat Power and Rancid.

With a sound unhinged and loose, Coolies play a free form version of punk rock n roll inspired by nobody. Their amps are fried and the rhythm section is a disjointed clattering wall of sound. Their live shows are underground art performances of raw qualities, basic and guttural. They’ve had a stop/start career so far so we’re happy they are making it to Glasgow this Sunday 7th April before they (potentially) stop again! This Freakender show is for the cities DIY music scene to rejoice in!
